Rhodonite: a Calming Semi-precious Stone
For those who are fans of semi-precious stones, especially the women, the pink ones are usually more favored. And among the more attractive pink stones, Rhodonite exudes a certain beauty and elegance. Rhodonite is a gemstone that comes in pink or red. Its name comes from the Greek word ‘Rhodon’ which means rose. The bright color that it comes in could also be accompanied by some black dendritic inclusions which are caused by manganese oxide being present.
Ever since it was discovered as a valuable semi-precious stone, Rhodonite has been used as an embellishment or ornamentation for slices, cabochons and necklaces and in other pieces of jewelry. This gemstone can be found in Australia, Russia, Canada, India and Madagascar.
Rhodonite crystals usually have thick tabular habits, but are actually rare. This stone has a cleavage that is perfect and prismatic, that is almost at right angles. Hardness is around 5.5 to 6.5, with its specific gravity of 3.4 to 3.7. Rhodonite’s luster is vitreous, and is less pearly on cleavage surfaces.
It has also been considered as an ornamental stone. The cleavage of Rhodonite is perfect, so this would mean that it would break in defined planes of 60 and 120 degrees. The stone has a white streak.
This semi-precious stone is believed to have the power of stabilizing emotions, ensuring that the mind and body works in harmony and bringing order to feelings. Due to its properties, rhodonite is considered to be helpful for improving self-confidence since it has a somewhat calming effect on an individual’s nervous system. It has also been said that it could be an aid for studying through improving one’s memory and reducing confusion and uncertainty.
