MOSAIC has been called “a bizarre art-form,” by Roger Ling. Lapis Lazuli is a rich stone with white markings, glittering with crystals of golden pyrite. Malachite, a green stone is used to depict greenery. Agate, jasper, onyx, porphyry, and other stones present a spectrum of vivid shades. Using all these, the artists created some astonishing masterpieces. They used the coloured stones to represent rocky landscapes, vegetation, rough water or even skies with wandering clouds. Gnosis is the famous mosaicist known for his work.

For a mosaic painting, a tracing of it is cut into pieces. The artist patiently chooses the right stone for each section. Each section of the tracing is glued to the stone slice that is selected. After the pieces are assembled and permanently stuck to a slate-backing sheet, a final levelling and polishing of the stones is done. The artists use different color tones in order to gain realistic effects of light and shade. Floral, geometric borders, landscapes, along with Christian imagery and images of prominent contemporary figures have remained the subjects that imaginative artists have tackled successfully.

Mosaic form of art became so prevalent during the 19th-century that it could be found in city halls, churches, museums, opera houses and almost everywhere. All this requires a lot of labour and patience on the part of the mosaicists. It takes hours of dedication to produce simple work. This is why the prices artists ask for their works set these mosaics way beyond the reach of most people.

Sixteenth-Century Italian artist Giorgio Vasari wrote: “Mosaic is the most durable picture that exists. Other paintings fade through time, but mosaic continually brightens with age.” Mosaics are indeed fascinating paintings in stone found in so many Fine Art Gallery !
